Why Base-60? The Superior Composite Benefit

Why do we have 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour? The number 60 is a Superior Highly Composite Number. It has 12 factors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, and 60. This allows a circle (or an hour) to be easily divided into halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, and sixths without resulting in messy recurring decimals. This makes 60 exceptionally practical for mechanical clocks and manual calculations.

When adding or subtracting time intervals, the most common error is treating the minutes like decimals. In decimal, you carry over at 100; in time, you carry over at 60.

The 12-hour clock (AM/PM) is common in civilian life in North America and parts of Europe, effectively splitting the day into two 12-hour cycles. However, for military, medical, and scientific operations, the 24-hour clock (also known as Military Time) is used to eliminate ambiguity. 1:00 PM becomes 13:00, and 12:00 AM (midnight) marks 00:00.
